Diane Arbus (1923-1971)
Diane Arbus is well known for her photographs of people on the fringes of society. She primarily uses the square and black and white. She focuses on people who seem strange or odd by standards of society. Arbus did not want to be known as the "photographer of freaks," which consequently, was something she was often referred to as.
Arbus was often criticized for her controversial subject matter, and eventually committed suicide in 1971 due to an overdose and self inflicted wounds, believed to be caused by depressive episodes.
Although her work is controversial, it is still viewed today and considered some of the best work in photography.
