A very good article that discusses the smile in portraiture (or lack thereof). As photographers, we often cite technical limitations for the apparent lack of smiles seen in early photography. However, this article points out that smiling for a portrait was not looked upon favorably, by our culture, until more modern times.
One of my favorite quotes: "A smile is like a blush – it is a response, not an expression per se, and so it can neither be easily maintained nor easily recorded."
