DIY Ringflash Tutorial by Kayla

If you are unfamiliar with what a ring flash is, it is a circular flash tube that fits around your camera lens and provides even illumination of the subject. It was originally invented in the 50's for dental photography and is used in a lot of macro as well as portrait and fashion photography.

A noticeable result of using a ring flash in portraits can sometimes be a circular reflection of light in the subjects eyes, as seen below.

You can purchase a ring flash or ring flash adapter anywhere from $50.00 to $350.

Or you can use a search engine and find numerous ways to make your own, including this one that involves a plastic bowl and aluminum foil.
