Artificial Light Tutorial by Mattie

Sunshine Effect in Studio with Artificial Light

When it is a rainy or cloudy day and you just want to take pictures that capture the sunlight, then you can experiment with this process to create artificial sunlight in your photographs.

Concept Breakdown:
a. Sun- Clamp a lamp with a clear bulb.
b. Time of Day- Raise or lower the lamp to imitate the time of day.
c. Clouds- Diffuse the light with material such as a roll of drafting vellum.
d. Sunlight peaking through the clouds- Poke or cut holes in the vellum to release harsher light.

Extras (if desired):
a. Use a fill light or bounce-light from the front of your subject to soften hard shadows created by direct light.
b. Use selective focus and a shallow depth of field.

What you'll need:
DSLR Camera 17-85mm lens
Tripod
Surface desired
Background
Clamp Lamps on light stands
Roll of diffusion vellum on boom arm
White foam core board clamped to light stand

Camera Settings:
